I'd like to introduce you to Mr Alternative Transportation Commuter for April, John Kuzmiak. I'm hoping to make this a monthly post, if I can find enough non-car drivers in town. If you, or someone you know would like to be recognized as an Alternative Transportation Commuter of the month, please send me an email at kopp.ryan@gmail.com

What form of alternative transportation do you use?
I walk to and from work each day (about 6 miles round trip, formerly 9.6 miles).

Why did you start using alternative transportation?
I have lived within walking distance (5 miles) of work throughout my career, so that
I was able to either walk or bike. When I lived in New Jersey I had a 60-mile round trip by
car. I adopted the alternative transportation, for my health, the health of the community
that I live in, and ultimately the planet.

How has alternative transportation helped you with your lifestyle (economics, health, relationships)?
Alternative transportation has allowed me to get good low-stress exercise each day,
clear my head of the day's stresses, and contemplate (when the trip is along a quiet path).
It certainly has reduced costs for fuel and wear-and-tear on the vehicle. It is nice to greet
people along the way.

What do you do for a living?
I am employed as a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Any funny or interesting commuting stories that you may want to share?
I got a major adrenaline rush while walking to work prior to 6 am the other day when a small
herd of deer startled me as they ran through the brush. Couldn't see what was making the racket startled me.

What do people (coworkers, friends) say when you tell them that you use alternative transportation to commute to work?
Coworkers seem to be impressed with the distance that I walk each day (had been 9.6 miles
round trip) but only a few are involved in alternative transportation (cycling). The only advice that I have received to this point is that I need to get more up-to-date, fashion-wise (get rid of the 1970's shorts)!
